Everything says something about us. I’m not sure you not being invested in Salieri says something bad. He’s a pretty awful critter. If you couldn’t tell, the film is among my all time favorites.
It wasn’t just that I wasn’t invested in Salieri, though: I couldn’t stand him. And the movie forces us to spend time with him and get into his mindset, because he’s the one telling the story.
I now think the reason Salieri’s depiction made my flesh crawl so much is because of my own weakness against pride. One prideful person can’t abide another’s pride.
I got quite a bit out of it, actually. I fear that a big part of the reason I hated the film so much is because the depiction of Salieri got under my skin. But that says something about me, doesn’t it?
I’ve only seen this film once, and I hated it. After reading this, I’m thinking I missed what was actually there. Maybe I should see it again.
Thanks for the analysis!

And I could tell, and I’m glad it is. You were able to explain what the big deal is about the film that I wasn’t able to get from watching it myself.

Such a good choice.
