The absorption argument is the one I can’t dismiss. I’ve been shaped by García Márquez, Steinbeck, Dostoevsky, Stoker. That’s not a metaphor, that's how I write. The difference I see between that and what the machine does is that I went through something to get there, and that process changed me. Also, AI writes the same for everyone. No matter how much you want to hide it, it still feels and reads that way.
There is a difference, for sure. That’s why it means something to you and it always will. Because one thing is of value does not make everything that isn’t that thing, less valuable. They’re just two separate things. It also means something to the people you touch. Your relationship with the people who read your work exists between the two of you.
Just coming back here to say that there are so many gems in this essay that have been bouncing around in my consciousness for a few days, including "that’s self-interest wearing ethics as a uniform," "they are the kings who didn’t have to be born royal," and "the novelty is the possibility of conducting a major transition as something other than an accident that happens to people."
